Hi Folks!

Last month was very exiting with a lot of bad weather but excellent fishing in the lagoons for big tarpon. It’s quite normal to encounter some perfect conditions for fly fishing during May and June based on weather. We guide some fly costumers, plenty of hook ups, jumps and a bunch of medium to big tarpon on the long rod, it was a ball. One of the best morings Capt. David achieved 17 hook ups on fly in 4 hours landing 6 tarpons, all between 40-60.
The first weekend of June we had our Cangrejos Tarpon Tournament. The tournament this year was dedicated to our good friend Capt. Nico Guzman naming this issue La Copa Nico Guzmán.
Uff …… what a tournament!!!!!, it got intense since the first day, competition was the name of the game and with the same goal for all the boats score was tight at all times. Fishing on Tarpon Sniper with Capt. David Payackovich, Capt. Alejandro Velez and Capt. Omar Orraca we proudly managed to place second on best boat. A well deserve first place was for the crew of Master Baiter. They manage to not only place first on best boat but also with the biggest fish. congratulations to owner/Capt. Wilson Martel. I can’t finish this section without mentioning tres leches….. Increíble!!! Sebastian Negron better known by Pachan managed to land 3 big tarpons the last day to get 3rd biggest fish. Well done!!!
Billfish wise San Juan is providing great action for blue marlin and king mackerel. Most boats troling lures or natural bait are raising 1-3 blue marlin per 3/4 day. Best action for marlin is happening few days after new moon and full moon and few days before and after the full. On mid quarter of the moon when the marlin action slow down we try for king mackerel based on customer desition or request. This mid quarters doesn’t mean you are not going to get anything every day but the action can be slow for some boats for few days and it’s general for every body.
Last week I had the opportunity to fish DR for white marlin, the bite was and still is very hot. The boat I fished, a Bertram 46 express named El Caiman with Capt. Jose ‘Kiko’ Rodriguez raised 33 billfish on 16 hours of fishing. I personally had 10 strikes fought 5 and land 4. Not good but not bad when it comes to white marlin on bait. St. Thomas blue marlin action is off the hook as well. Average of 4-6 bites per day is not surprising. For the next 3-4 months it will be hot action. We can provide trips off St. Thomas upon on request.
