Big Fish!

August 21, 2008 - Blue marlin bite was hot this last week. On the International Billfish Tournament held on Club Nautico de San Juan the action was very good with some boats raising up to 4-5 blue marlin in one day. We had a very lucky day with a 100% hook up rate… we land 3 for 3 on blue marlin the day before the tournament start. The first fish was about 250 pounds, the second about 100 and the 3erd blue marlin was about 350 of pure power. We were able to raise 9 blue marlin on 5, 1/2 day charters, I think it was very good for the amount of time on the water. Also 2 blues were over 500 pounds. It was a bag of fun this week. We did not fish the tournament but I was glad it put up with the expectation of every fisherman on the event as usual…..congratulation to the staff who organize the tournament.

In the lagoons this tarpon are here and thick. We have about 4 school of tarpon on a steady action all day long for the last week concentrating the action on the peack tides. The average size of tarpon are about 10 to 40 pounds but some bigger fish were hook and land on several boats in the San Jose Lagoon over 60 to 70 pounds. This last week Capt. Mike has guide some customer at night fishing a strong incoming tide with a full moon and the average size of tarpon were between 40 to 80 ponds and he also guide a 15 to 18 pounds snook. Good job Mike.

We have a full open agenda for the next coming month. Oct is my favorite month in San Juan with incredible mix off shore and great action inshore, flats seas condition and all light tackle. Off shore we will use TLD 20 from Shimano and TLD 16 to target sailfish, mahi-mahi, wahoo and white marlin. We also fish fresh ballyhoo and circle hooks from Owner when we fish off shore. August 05, 2008 - I am sorry I was away for few month but I need to take care of my health and some good improvement on the company.

Last year First Lady raise 78 billfish and land 43, it was a grate year for my boat so I think it was about time to give back what she has provide for me and my customers. One of the first project was to get First Lady or the Bertram 35 and destroyed all the wood inside and start from the engine room to the salon, paint, new blue corian counter top, flush mount sink, custom build sofa/storage box, teak floor and much more. It was long days on the marina cleaning, painting and building but she is ready to get back on the water and start providing some more memorable times. The action off shore this year has been notorious for size with some 700 ponder report by some recreational fisherman but the biggest one so far this year was a 847 blue marlin by Caito on his boat La Pana, good job again viejo.|

In the lagoons the tarpon action has been very decent with average of 10 to 20 bite or fish show up on the baits. The average size of fish in the lagoons are 10 to 40 pound. Tarpon Sniper ……the original Pathfinder 24 not the fatal attraction one…. is averaging 5 to 8+ fish on the boat per half day. Most of this action is split on trolling and drifting live bait. The frenzies still happening on peack tides and at night with the incoming tide we are fishing closer to the marina for bigger fish. The snook fishing has been very good as well with some boats boating snook up to 15 pound in the lagoons and bigger on the marina inlet.
About the fuel problem we have to increase the price for light tackle and deep sea for next winter starting on Dec. We will increase another $25.00 inflating the price to $375.00 for one or people for 1/2 day or 4 hours, personally think that we have some of the best overall tarpon fleet there is in the Caribbean Island, I will said all the companies in the lagoon system use good tackle, boats and all the guide are fluid on English so I don’t think this is a lot of difference on the price but it will help us to keep up with the good hooks, tackle and boats. We have a new bread of charter that the bottom line is to ask your self before booking if they already has guide a fish over 100 pound…. only one and if they already have at least a thousand tarpon guided…… we all know the answer. Another technique adopt by some charters services is to said that my company and/or other charters guides don’t have permits to operate in the Island, if you have any concern about comments like this one we are willing to show all the permits and insurance there is needed in the Island to run the operation. This competitors don’t have any thing good said about no body or them self in order to book more trips so they create stories like that to spook customers.
