Caribbean Winter Action

Last month was a very good off shore month with a mix bag of sailfish, white marlin, blue marlin and wahoo up to 40 pound. Capt. Many and mate Frank were able to guide some customer to up 9 bites of bill fish in combination of blue marlin, sailfish and wahoo. Also the mahi-mahi season is full in, yesterday the boys guide Mr. Alan Kaufman to a sailfish, spearfish and 4 mahi-mahi. All this action were on Shimano TLD 20 with 20 pound test…. sweet and light. Some other recreational boats were able to land the limit for mahi-mahi per boat(10). The down side of this action is the ocean, it start to blow 15 to 25 knots wind, during high pressure ares. This mean if you are going to book a fishing trip for off shore make sure you are aware of the seas condition, ask the capt. how big the ocean is, how big are the waves, Puerto Rico can be very windy and hard on seas condition. If you have 20 knots wind you still can go out and it will be bumpy but not bad or dangerous if you don’t get sea sick.

In the lagoons the action was a little slow compare with Oct and part of Nov. The tarpon frenzies still happening on peak tides. Tarpon are averaging 10 to 40 pound with some tarpon on the 80 pound class. We are normally fishing the tarpon with anchovies on Owner circle hooks. The average tarpon landed per 1/2 day is 4 to 6. We have snook average 3 to 12 pound. End of Feb, March, April and good part of May is our big tarpon season were the big girl visit our lagoon system. The average size of tarpon at this time frame are 50 to 120+ pound. On the Tarpon Sniper we use Shimano Stella 10000 and 20 lbs test with Owner Mutu Light Circle hook to target this big tarpon. On the fly fishing for tarpon we use 10wt Sage Xi-2 with Tibor Riptide reel.

WHEN YOU BOOK A TARPON ASK THE GUIDE HOW MANY THOUSANDS OF TARPON THEY HAD GUIDE, HOW MANY YEARS OF EXPIRIENCE, HOW MANY TARPON OVER 100 TO 140 POUND THEY HAD GUIDE, BIG TARPON SEASON IS RIGHT UP THE CORNER, DO YOUR HOME WORK, WE HAVE VERY GOOD GUIDES IN THE AREA, AVOID RIP OFF.

Hi

Fishing for tarpon in the lagoons has produce some good afternoon and some good short action in the morning. On last Friday I was able to get the tarpon and the marlin on the same day with a hatchet marlin in the morning on a Shimano Stella reel 10000 spool with Sufix 20 pound test. The fish took a ballyhoo rig with a long shank hook 9/0 form Owner this hooks are incredible sharp and strong, it went threw the bill like butter. In the last couple afternoon we nail a couple of nice sizes tarpon 50-90 ponder, this action was right after a nasty rain. School of small tarpon still frenzy around strong hours tide or at the end of the tide.
We fish two morning on fly with Tony form The Urban Angler in New York. He was able to land 4 tarpon on the first day the biggest tarpon was around 80 pound on 8wt Sage Xi-2 with a Tibor reel. The second morning our shot of good action for the fly was short and we had 4 hook up at small tarpon and lost all 4 tarpon and land a small snook.

Off shore we still having some days with multiple shots at blue marlin, white marlin, hatchet marlin and sailfish. I think that most boats has most of the action trolling skirt ballyhoo and the afternoon are the most productive with some days with up 8 shots of different billfish. Small wahoo keep stealing mono leaders rig for billfish.

Remember to book your trip a head of time and do your home work shopping around, we have very good guides in the area. Avoid rip off. Is not a tourist tour is a fishing trip.
